At Bison Transport we believe it is our corporate responsibility to preserve the environment that we live in and as such have developed a comprehensive Fuel Management Program along with environmentally friendly business practices to support this initiative.
We are committed to utilizing sound environmental practices and providing a healthy workplace for our employees to work and succeed. Whether it is through our idle reduction technologies, recycling programs, efficient routing practices, or newer equipment, Bison Transport focuses on providing environmentally conscious freight transportation services.
Fuel Efficiency
Fuel economy is an important part of a well-rounded Fuel Management Program. When purchasing a new tractor or trailer, Bison Transport incorporates the following:
- Fuel efficient tires
- Aerodynamic wind packages
- Fuel efficient transmissions
- Fuel efficient engines
- Auxiliary power units to reduce idling
- In-Cab computers to monitor fuel economy
- Speed governed at 65 MPH
Beyond setting up our tractors and trailers to be fuel efficient, we also have developed a fuel economy course that all our Drivers are required to take. Drivers who have taken the course have shown an improvement in fuel economy of two percent.
Reducing Emissions
Bison Transport is committed to reducing the amount of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide by continuing to improve upon the environmental performance of our freight operations. We have incorporated the following:
- Fuel efficient tractor/trailer spec
- Expansion of turnpike operation (2-53' trailer pulled by a single tractor)
- Expansion of Intermodal operation
- Strict anti- idling policies.
Eco- Friendly Business Practices
Keeping the environment in the forefront of our minds, Bison Transport has also developed business practices that include:
- Actively reducing the amount of empty miles that we drive
- Encouraging employees to car pool or ride a bike to work
- Using hand dryers instead of paper towels
- Actively reducing the amount of paper used in reports by encouraging communication via email and filing documents electronically
Long Term Focus
In 2003 the Eco-Wellness Committee for Bison Transport was established. The main focus of the Eco-Wellness Committee is integrating environmental and wellness considerations into our business planning and decision making processes.
Bison Transport Eco-Wellness principles include:
- Integrate environmental and wellness considerations into our business planning and decision making processes
- Identify, assess and manage environmental risks associated with our operations and products throughout their life cycle, to reduce environmental impact to the extent that proven technology will allow, eliminate or reduce harmful discharges, hazardous materials and waste
- Identify, assess and develop initiatives to promote the health and wellness of all employees and provide opportunities for personal enrichment
Bison Transport is also an active member of both Natural Resources Canada's FleetSmart program and the US EPA's SmartWay Transportation Partnership. Our Fuel Management Program has been recognized as best in class in the transportation section by twice being awarded Natural Resources Canada's Energy Efficiency Award (1999 and 2004).
We will continue on our journey of contributing positively to the environment with creative and innovative solutions, tapping our resources to explore new options.
